Daphne (Thymelaceae). Germination.is stepwise with a time gap between splitting of the seed coat and development of the radicle although both may occur in the same cycle. Germination is further complicated by extended germination over several cycles and by rapid rotting of part of the seed on contact with moisture suggesting internal infection. Two of the most popular species ( D. genkwa, fresh seed germ. 70(4%)-40-70(3%)-40(2%) and 40(23%). No further germination occurred over five further cycles. Fresh seed from a year earlier germ. 40(5%)-70(17%)-40-70(5%). These results are not consistent, and in fact germination was generally erratic. Germination failed with seed DS 6 m at 40 or70
